WCHS recognizes that unexpected things can happen in our lives that require us to make changes. For whatever reason, people may be forced to surrender their animal(s). Please know that we will do everything in our power to ensure your surrendered animal is placed in a responsible, loving home. The surrender fee we charge is for your pet to come into our facility and will help us care for your animal.

If you need to surrender an animal to our shelter, we ask that you call and make an appointment first.

Surrender Information:

  • Priority is given to Washington County residents, but we may take out of county animals if space permits.
  • Please call our shelter during business hours to make arrangements for animal surrenders at 262-677-4388.
  • When you surrender an animal, he or she will receive a health evaluation and behavior assessment. There is no time or space limit at our shelter. Your pet will remain with us until a new home is found. Be aware, however, that an animal that has been friendly to you may react differently under the stress of being around strangers and other animals.
  • At the time of surrender, you should bring in all medical records for your animal as well as your driver’s license.
  • A typical surrender can take up to 30 minutes as we have a questionnaire and paperwork to fill out to help make the best match for your animal when it is adopted.
