Intake Hours
WCHS is only able to take in animals that are found in Washington County. If you found an animal in a different county, please contact that local humane society as the owner will not be looking for their animal at a different humane society.

If you found a dog:
- Safely contain the dog.
- Check for collar & tags.
- Keep dog tied up somewhere visible to people walking by, for at least 30 minutes.
- Post on local Facebook/neighborhood pages.
- Call the shelter to file a found dog report. This way if an owner calls us, we can direct them to you right away.
- If you are not able to hold onto the dog, depending on what time it is call the appropriate number listed above.
If you found a kitten
Use our chart to determine what is best for the kitten.
Many times it will be best for kittens under 6 weeks old to stay where they are found. Rarely are found kittens completely abandoned by their mothers. Feral mothers will typically only come around certain times so they don’t attract predators to the kittens.

If you found a cat
- Safely contain the cat.
- Check for Collar & Tags
- Check the left ear for a “tip”. If the cat has a portion of the tip of the ear that is cut straight across, this cat is a community cat and has already been altered and has likely just wandered a little more than usual. This cat should be released again.
- Post on local Facebook/neighborhood pages, if able.
- Call the shelter to file a found cat report. This way if an owner calls us, we can direct them to you right away.
- If you are not able to hold onto the cat, depending on what time it is, call the appropriate number listed above.
- There are some municipalities in Washington County that do not contract with WCHS for stray cats. WCHS can still take in cats from these areas but a small fee may apply. That fee goes directly for the care of that cat while at WCHS.
If you found wildlife:
- Safely contain the wildlife based on the species. A rubbermaid tub flipped over with a brick on top, a shoebox, a 5 gallon pail with a lid, a cat carrier are all different ways to contain wildlife.
- WCHS & wildlife rehabilitators are not able to come out if the animal is not contained.
- There is not a rehabilitator in Washington County for adult raccoons or deer.
If you need to call a wildlife rehabilitator, please leave a message and allow time for them to call you back. They are likely on the phone with another person, tending to a new intake, or it could be feeding time.
