VOLUNTEERING – The precious gift of time

Volunteers are critical parts of non-profits throughout the world, including here at WCHS. Our volunteers not only help to lighten the load of our staff, but by donating their time and talents, volunteers ensure that shelter operations can progress to a new level by assisting in socializing the animals, cleaning the shelter and helping at events and fundraisers. Staff and volunteers work together not only in animal care giving, but also in sharing the WCHS mission throughout the shelter and the community.

When you join WCHS as a volunteer you will become part of a team working to make our community a safer and more humane place for all living creatures.  Each time you leave the shelter you will be rewarded in knowing that you’ve created one more wagging tail, a purr and a smile.

The More The Merrier – Group Volunteering:

When you join WCHS as a volunteer you will be included in a network of volunteers working to make our community a safer and more humane place for all living creatures. Each time you leave the shelter you will be rewarded in knowing that you’ve created one more wagging tail, a purr and a smile.

Below are a few of the many possibilities available to raise money, wish list items and awareness of the WCHS mission throughout your community.

  •  Make Puppy Mush

We use puppy mush to feed to puppies or other dogs that are sick, needing a bland diet or not eating for other reasons. We use this mush at least five days a week, sometimes twice per day and it is always needed.

    Recipe: 1 pound ground beef
    3 cups rice
    1 bag frozen broccoli
    1 clove garlic
Cook meat, mixing in garlic. Cook rice. Mix together rice, meat and broccoli and put in baggies. Keep frozen until delivery. *If you would like to increase the recipe, feel free!

  •

    Hot Dog Treats
We use hot dog treats for training and assessing dogs. To make, slice a fresh hot dog lengthwise. Cut halves into small bite sizes pieces. Place on paper towel on microwave safe plate. Microwave 30-60 seconds. Stir and repeat several times until hot dog pieces are dehydrated. Store in ziplock bags.

  •

    Peanut Butter Jar Drive
Ever wonder what to do with the rest of the peanut butter you cannot get out of the empty jar? Well, the dogs at WCHS would love those “almost gone” jars to enjoy! The dogs at WCHS get them as a treat to entertain them and keep them happy. Please donate any “almost gone” PLASTIC jars with lids on to WCHS. It’s an easy way to help the dogs!

  •

    Donation Drive
Go to the wish list page to find a full list of our most needed items for the animals of WCHS. Donations can be delivered to WCHS:
    Monday 8am-7pm
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8am-5pm
    Wednesday 8am-8pm

  •

    Bake For The Animals
Baking for one of our many bake sales is a fun and easy way to earn those hours of volunteer service. There are several times of the year that WCHS has a bake sale in conjunction with an event.

If you are interested in baking for one of our events or bake sales, please email the Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] and include your name and email to be added to the bakers distribution list. Be sure to add the email to your contacts so the emails can be received. When baked goods are needed, you will receive an email with the details of quantity, packaging instructions and delivery dates. Baking is a wonderful way for youth groups to help!

  •

    Make Catnip Toys For Cats
Fill an infant sock with stuffing and catnip. Sew together. These are great toys that our adoptable cats love to play with!

  •

    Make Bandanas For Dogs
Decorate bandanas with colorful markers for adoptable dogs to wear.

  •

    Seasonal Shelter Clean Up
This opportunity is a terrific way for volunteer groups to volunteer their time at WCHS. Volunteers (10 years and up), with the proper supervision, help with outside seasonal clean up. Most groups help in our courtyard with leaf removal and general clean up when the seasons change. Times may vary and can be arranged to fit the shelter times and groups availability. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for more information. Groups generally, do not interact with the animals at WCHS.

  •

    Rummage Sale Volunteers

Volunteers 16 and older are able to help with our annual rummage sale. Each spring WCHS looks for several volunteers to help unload, sort, price and help customers at the fundraiser. Volunteers can help with the bake sale in addition to the rummage sale itself. Volunteers are needed for set up and break down of the rummage sale.
